Welcome to the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE)
The governing body for Freemasonry in England and Wales.
One of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world, the roots of modern Freemasonry lie with the medieval stonemasons that built our castles and cathedrals, yet it is as relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago.
Freemasons use four important guiding principles to help define their path through life: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity.
Membership is open to people from all backgrounds and the organisation’s aim is to empower members to be the best they can be – it’s about building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society.
Freemasonry provides a structure for members to come together under these common goals, enabling people to make new friendships, develop themselves and make valuable contributions to charitable causes. We are one of the largest charitable givers in the country, contributing £42 million to deserving causes in 2019.
Our 6,000 members have always come from all walks of life and meet as equals whatever their faith, ethnic group or position in society. For many this spirit of fellowship is what they value most. Making new friends, helping others, following a family tradition and participating in the ceremonial are also important.Freemasonry contributed

The garden also has a wedding pagoda for that extra special occasion.
There are two female-only Grand Lodges: The Order of Women Freemasons and HFAF – Freemasonry for Women. They both follow exactly the same ceremonies and wear the same regalia as male Freemasons, and they often work closely with community and charity projects.

Because it’s a lot of Fun!
A Masonic Lodge provides wide ranging opportunities for great camaraderie, socialising, having fun and making new friends.
Because it’s Worthwhile! Freemasonry is a worthwhile way to spend some of your free time. It provides a real chance to make a positive impact in the Community and to make a real difference to the lives of people who need assistance.
Because it’s a Challenge! If you are looking to challenge yourself then Freemasonry uniquely provides many ways in which you can grow and develop both morally and intellectually. The various aspects of running a Lodge provide real life experience in such diverse areas as Administration, Financial Management, Event Planning, Fundraising, Training & Education, Public Speaking and Social Welfare.
Because it’s Fascinating! Freemasonry affords its members the chance to become part of a rich historical and cultural tradition, which has existed for over 300 years. Freemasonry has become part of the social fabric of our Nation to the extent that masonic phrases such as “Past Master” and “On the Level” have become part of our everyday language. Its basic principles of Compassion, Benevolence and Integrity provide its members with a moral framework by which to live, to attain a greater knowledge of themselves, and an opportunity for personal, intellectual and spiritual development.
Freemasonry means different things to each of person who joins. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others it’s about being able to help deserving causes – contributing to family and for society. But for most, it is an enjoyable hobby.
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal, and charitable organisation. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry
